A case was filed today against 55 policemen, including 10 named officers, for allegedly ordering indiscriminate firing and inhumane treatment of BNP activists in Habiganj in 2021.
The case was filed in the Habiganj Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court by district BNP member and lawyer Shamsul Islam.
Among the accused are former superintendent of police SM Murad Ali, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station Masuk Ali, former Inspector (Investigation) Daus Mohammad, and former OC of the Intelligence Branch Al Amin.
Court inspector Nazmul Hossain confirmed that the judge had accepted the case and scheduled a hearing for November 5.
According to the case statement, the incident occurred on December 22, 2021, when BNP held a meeting in Shayestanagar, Habiganj, to demand the release and medical treatment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Police allegedly opened fire on party members gathered outside the BNP office, injuring hundreds.
Shamsul Islam claimed the police acted under the orders of former SP Murad Ali, disrupting what he described as a “peaceful event”.
The case followed a previous complaint on the matter that was dismissed by the court.
BNP Organising Secretary GK Gaus said that the case was filed in accordance with party decisions.
